In a pair of major victories for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that married same-sex couples were entitled to federal benefits and, by declining to decide a case from California, effectively allowed same-sex marriages there.
Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul stated on the Glen Beck show that these decisions may eventually legitimize all sorts of marriages, including those between humans and animals. While likely made in a sarcastic manner, Sen. Paul reflects much of the conservative thought on this issue. As may be recalled, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman recently reversed his anti gay marriage stance when his son announced that he was gay. Sen. Portman justified his reversal on the basis that he could not continue to deny his son the same joy of marriage that he himself had experienced.
